The Urban Hub is presenting a programme of fringe events at all three party conferences in autumn 2008.
The Urban Hub brings together the Core Cities group, the Centre for Cities Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE), and the Work Foundation for a series of panel discussions on the issues affecting cities.
Why focus on cities?Britain's cities drive our economy and are central to social cohesion and climate change. They are major centres of business and wealth creation that in turn power the economy of the surrounding region, with some city-region areas producing 50% and more of their entire region’s economic output, making a vital contribution to the national economy. All political parties are thinking seriously about how cities can be given more financial and political powers to create a brighter future.
The Urban Hub will examine the economic, social and cultural opportunities and challenges our towns and cities face in an uncertain economic climate. Our events will explore how cities are changing now and what they might look like in the future, and will ask what this means for the people who live in them and for public policy.
