Core Cities Summit 2007

The Core Cities Summit hosted by Nottingham over two days has been hailed a success.

In the closing speech to the Summit, Chief Executive of Nottingham City Council Michael Frater said the event had shown that there was real passion and expertise in the Core Cities and a strong commitment to closer collaboration on some of the key issues facing major cities.

Mr Frater also said that the contributions from Government at the Summit had signalled a new relationship between Whitehall and the town hall – with less red tape and more power to take important decisions for local people.

Around 450 delegates attended the Summit, from the eight Core Cities of Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle, Nottingham and Sheffield, including chief executives, council leaders and young delegates. Key speakers included:

Michael Frater said: “This Summit has come at a very important time for cities and the Core Cities Group, which represents 16 million people, is well placed to drive the agenda on establishing new and more productive ways of working with Government and tackling some of the key issues facing major cities, such as responding to the climate change challenge.”
