A summary of the eight work streams objectives is set out below.

Transport and connectivity
The Transport and Connectivity Group comprises transport and policy experts from across the Core Cities, and works with DfT, RDAs, PTEG, PTAs and PTEs to help influence and develop policy and thinking, particularly with Government, to ensure that transport strategy supports the continued economic growth of the Core Cities and the city regions.

Innovation
The Innovation Group aims to influence Government thinking and proposals in relation to innovation and business support, to ensure that the Core Cities and city regions are able to realise their assets and opportunities. The Group aims to influence innovation policy to: drive forward economic growth; meet the challenges and opportunities of globalisation and; ensure the UK’s continued success in wealth creation and scientific policy-making.

Skills and employment
This Group works to influence Government thinking and proposals in relation to skills and employment to ensure that the Core Cities are able to both develop the complex skill sets we need to compete internationally and are able to include more of our citizens in our economic growth.

Sustainable communities
This work stream supports the Core Cities in successfully delivering sustainable communities by increasing understanding of the opportunities and needs of the Cities and city regions, securing increased support for investment programmes and removing barriers to progress. The Group works to reinforce and build on public and private sector confidence in the ability of the Cities to deliver, working toward increased devolution to the Cities and city regions.

Culture and creative industries
This Group works to influence Government thinking and proposals in relation to culture provision and the development of the creative industries across the Core Cities, enabling them to provide cultural access and experience for all, to attract and sustain creative industries, and improve the reputation and image of the cities internationally.

Climate Change
The Climate Change Working Group was created to support climate change mitigation and adaptation strategy and action across all Core Cities activities and to better understand the opportunities and threats climate change presents to large cities in the UK. The group has been set up to help understand the serious challenges that we face and to help address issues that need to be tackled in part at a local level, building on the commitment made in the Nottingham Declaration in 2000.

Finance and Industry
The Finance and Industry work stream works with Government to strengthen financial devolution and promote economic growth. It seeks to do this by increasing the possible range of long-term financial opportunities and freedoms for local authorities, and by improving the engagement of business in ensuring that resources are targeted to achieve common objectives.

Governance and partnerships
This Group works to influence thinking and share best practice to provide an overall framework that supports city region development but at the same time creates the space for individual city regions to develop governance arrangements that reflect local circumstances. The Group also works to develop other important partnerships, for example between the Core Cities and London.
