We welcome the Industrial Strategy White Paper, but there is more to do if we are to unleash our cities' vast economic potential.
Cities are drivers of growth in their regions, but there is more to do to unleash the £100bn of economic potential that sits in the Core Cities and they are still dwarfed by London.
Our cities contain most of the key sectors identified in the Industrial Strategy, for example advanced manufacturing or creative industries.
The White Paper underlines how agglomeration drives growth, which is why we need to increase density. This should be a key aim of the strategy.
We need to increase:
- Physical density, by building and connecting more commercial and residential property.
- Business density - strenghthen and localist business support to encourage more entrepreneurship.
- Labour density - improving transport within city regions, fighting economic inactivity and poor health by reforming the state and reversing a decline in culture and leisure spending.
