Nottingham
24 June 2024

I attended Greenwood Dale and later studied at Peoples College and the University of Derby. When I was elected in 2013, I became the first female British-Pakistani Labour Councillor on Nottingham City Council.
I’m passionate about making sure everyone in Nottingham has the best opportunities to succeed and that we invest in our city for future generations. I am proud to be the first person of colour and only the second woman to lead our city.
I’ve worked since I was 16, starting off part-time at a local laundrette, and had roles in customer services and retail, including working at Boots. I’m proud to have always contributed in all the jobs I’ve had and wanted to show that hard work, no matter your background, will pay off.
I still live in Dales ward with my son, and I enjoy gardening, playing cricket (when I have the time) and my fantasy football league with my Labour Party colleagues. I chair the Nottingham Muslim Women’s Network and am a member of the GMB.
