20 May 2021

The 1918 Flu Pandemic saw commentators predict the end of cities, but the 20th and 21st centuries saw urban areas gain importance and become drivers of national economies. Now, as we begin to recover from Covid-19, the time is right for radical new thinking and leadership on issues including the future of high streets, city living and economic inequality. This new report from Core Cities UK and Key Cities looks at a number of issues including:

• How fast are people returning to city centres?
• How can cities recover whilst addressing inequality and deprivation?
• What is the role of housing and social infrastructure in ‘building back better’?
• Where do city centres fit into Government’s Levelling Up agenda?
• What powers do cities have and what further freedoms do they need?
• What is the role of central government in supporting cities in their recovery?

An interactive data set is also available so you can see the effects of Covid-19 on the economies of individual places within our networks.
